Imagine a Friday afternoon. You’re all done with classes for the week, the weather’s hot, we're still experiencing COVID-19, and you’re looking for something fun to do to get out of the house.

Why not stop by the Cal Poly Creamery’s Ice Cream Drive-Thru?

Cal Poly's Creamery is well known for its delectable cheese selection and other dairy products sold on campus and in local businesses around San Luis Obispo. Recently, they’ve opened up a new line of business, the Ice Cream Drive-Thru, and creamery employees are thrilled with how things are going.

Genevieve Regli, Agricultural Communication junior and communication manager for the Creamery, explains a little bit of the inspiration to start the drive-thru.

“It’s a combination of a lot of things. We’ve had really hot weather, we’ve had people who are looking for something to do, and then we’ve also had just this awesome business idea.”

Regli says students love working for the Creamery. They are able to learn the process of taking milk from a cow, turning it into a sweet frozen treat, and finding ways to effectively market and sell their products.

“It’s not just an opportunity to have a job. For a lot of these students, this is pretty much a glimpse of what their future is going to look like,” says Regli. “Ultimately, you know, at Cal Poly we are preparing students for the future. And this is just one way we see that we're able to do that.”

Regli says that the team worked hard to publicize the event. Students posted signs all over town and put on cow costumes to get people’s attention. So far, all the hard work of students putting together the drive-thru has paid off.

“It’s pretty poppin’,” says Regli. “We were kind of surprised with the amount of positive feedback we had from the community.”

Regli continues to encourage students, faculty and staff, and the community to support the Creamery and emphasizes that the event is not just about ice cream.

"Lots of people love ice cream–but it’s something bigger than that. You’re supporting the students behind the product, the stories behind the product, the visions behind the product.”

The Cal Poly Creamery Ice Cream Drive-Thru is open every Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Dairy Science Complex off Mt. Bishop Rd., Building 18A.
